The Indian market has seen an onslaught of new electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing firms in recent years. The latest in line is Bengaluru-based startup River which has launched its first EV in the form of the Indie electric scooter.

Priced at Rs 1.25 lakh (ex-showroom), deliveries of the scooter are slated to commence in August. Interested buyers can book the scooter through the company’s official website at a token amount of Rs 1,250. The startup is backed by brands like Toyota and has its own production facility located in the outskirts of Bengaluru.

River Indie: an SUV of scooters?

The styling of Indie can be best described as a mixture of quirky and futuristic, w with its flat body panels and its robotic face up front. However, it puts practicality at the forefront thanks to its lock and load pannier mounts, crash guards and front footpegs. Hence, it is being marketed as an “SUV of scooters”.

To top it off, it accentuates its practicality with the longest and widest seat in this segment, a large 20-inch footboard, a massive 43-litre underseat storage with a light, a 12-litre glove box on the front apron. It also comes replete with accessories offered by the company like pannier bags, top boxes, and more. The e-scooter comes in three colour options including Monsoon Blue, Summer Red and Spring Yellow.

Besides its more practical features, Indie boasts of a well-kitted equipment comprising creature comforts such as all-LED illumination, a six-inch fully digital LED instrument panel, USB charging ports in glove box and handlebar, side-stand motor cut-off switch, and reverse parking assist. The instrument console is compatible with over the air (OTA) updates and displays a plethora of information.

Indie’s powertrain specifications

Powering Indie is a 6.7kW electric motor that draws energy from a 4kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Its mid-ship mounted motor drives the rear wheel via a belt drive and generates a peak output of 9 bhp and 26 Nm of torque. The company claims the scooter can achieve a real-world range of 120 km on a single charge. The battery can be charged up to 80% in five hours using the standard charger.

As for performance, the scooter can sprint 0-40 kmph in 3.9 seconds and can clock a top speed of 90 kmph. Users are also given three ride modes to choose from– Eco, Ride and Rush. It has a claimed gradeability (ability to climb inclines) of 18 degrees.

River Indie is underpinned by a dual-cradle tubular steel frame which is suspended on telescopic forks at the front and twin hydraulic rear springs at the rear. The scooter rolls on 14-inch alloy wheels while stopping power is gained through a 240mm front disc and a 200mm rear disc brake complemented by a combi-brake system.

Its seat height is accessible at 770mm while ground clearance is pegged at 165mm. Indie also boasts of a water wading capability of 300mm. While River plans to expand to 50 cities across India by 2024, sales of the battery-powered scooter will currently be limited to Bengaluru.
