After the successful launch of the new generation of Defender in October 2020, Land Rover is bringing the largest version of its SUV to India. The Tata Motors-owned brand has announced prices for Defender 130 in India which start at Rs 1.30 crore and go up to Rs 1.41 crore (both ex-showroom).

Earlier, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) had launched Defender 90 and Defender 110 in the country which have been very well received. Like its smaller siblings, Defender is available in two trims– HSE and X, which are available in both petrol and diesel guises.

Defender 130: A longer Defender 110

The longest in the Defender lineup, the 130 is 304mm longer than the 110 even though both iterations share the same wheelbase. This has helped liberate space for a third row of seats. As a result, Defender 130 comes with a three-row layout as standard with seating for up to eight people. Land Rover claims three adults can be seated in the third row comfortably.

Besides the additional length, Defender 130 is an exact visual replica of the 110. The increased length has also compromised the departure angle of the SUV, reducing from 40 degrees in Defender 110 to 28.5 degrees in Defender 130. This could have a negative impact on the SUV’s off-road capabilities.

The extra length also leads to improved boot space of 389 litres with all three rows up. It can be expanded up to a mammoth 2,516-litres with two rows folded down, providing 953 litres more than what is offered in Defender 110.

Similar styling, features

As mentioned earlier, Defender 130 is visually identical to its smaller siblings both in terms of exterior and interior styling. Some of the notable exterior highlights include matrix LED headlamps with integrated LED DRLs, smoked taillights, 20-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, and chunky front and rear bumpers with metallic bash plates.

Inside the cabin, Defender 130 is similar to other derivatives in the lineup with the same dashboard layout, although it gets a slightly larger 11.4-inch Pivi Pro touchscreen infotainment display. Other features on offer include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, 4-zone automatic climate control, a fully digital instrument console, a 360-degree surround camera, connected car tech, etc.

Powertrain specs

Under the hood, Defender 130 will offer two engine options– 3.0-litre, six-cylinder, P400 petrol engine and a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder, D300 diesel mill. The former churns out 394 bhp and 550 Nm of peak torque whereas the latter develops a peak output of 296 bhp and 600 Nm. Both powertrains are mild hybrid units, mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox sending power to all four wheels as standard.
