Misconceptions about FSSAI License

FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India that regulates the food businesses in India. There are certain rules and regulations that have to be followed by the food businesses mentioned by the FSSAI; a self-governing body that reports straight away to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

If you are running a food business or thinking of starting a one, then FSSAI License is compulsory to operate the business.

Many food business owners may think that their annual turnover is not even so high that they apply for the FSSAI License even so the truth is far from that. Below are the categories divided on the basis of turnover for obtaining the FSSAI license –

·        FSSAI registration if the turnover is below Rs. 12 lacs per annum

·        FSSAI state license if the turnover is above Rs. 12 lacs and below Rs. 20 crores in a year

·        FSSAI Central license if the turnover is above Rs. 20 crores

4.  Operation of multiple stores on single FSSAI license

During the inception of the food business, we apply for the food license. However, while opening a chain of similar stores at different locations; we may skip applying for the separate FSSAI license for every location.
