Matter launches Aera, India’s first geared electric motorcycle at Rs 1.44 lakh

Thursday March 02, 2023 , 3 min Read

After officially unveiling it in November last year, Matter—the Ahmedabad-based electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing startup—has finally launched its first two-wheeler EV. Christened as Aera, it is the first geared battery-powered motorcycle to be manufactured and launched in India.

Aera will be available in two variants—5000 and 5000+—priced at Rs 1.44 lakh and Rs 1.54 lakh (both ex-showroom, India, including FAME-II subsidy, excluding state subsidies), respectively. The company will launch two more variants of the electric motorcycle in the future—Aera 4000 and Aera 6000.

Matter previously exhibited its two-wheeler at the Auto Expo 2023. Pre-orders for the motorcycle are currently open in metros and Tier I cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Pune, and Chennai, among others. Bookings for Aera will officially begin within the next 30 days, and deliveries are slated to commence this summer. However, Matter didn’t specify a timeline.

Exterior design

Matter has adopted a tried and tested design of a naked street bike for Aera, which looks proportionate and sharp. In line with contemporary naked streetfighters, it gets an angular, forward-leaning stance. The bike is offered in three dual-tone colour schemes—grey and neon, blue and gold, black and gold, and a triple-tone red, black, and white shade.

Visual highlights like a unique LED headlight flanked by integrated turn indicators, a raised clip-on handlebar, star-pattern alloy wheels, a muscular faux fuel tank with extended shrouds, split seats, a floating tail section, and split-style grab rails make this a head turner.

Features offered

Matter has kitted Aera with some noteworthy features, including a seven-inch touch-compatible LCD instrumentation featuring music playback, turn-by-turn navigation, and call/message notification alerts. The screen also offers access to riding statistics and can be controlled via buttons on the switchgear, while the software is compatible to receive OTA (Over The Air) updates.

Other prominent creature comforts offered include geo-fencing, park assist (reverse functionality), theft detection, passive keyless entry and ignition, and a 5-litre storage compartment in the faux fuel tank. The 5000+ variant is offered with additional lifestyle and connected and care+ packages, although details of these are yet to be ascertained.

Powertrain, hardware specs

Powering the Aera 5000 range is a 10.5kW electric motor that draws energy from a liquid-cooled 5kWh battery, which returns a 125km real-world range. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox, a rarity in EVs. Aera’s 4000 and 6000 variants will benefit from a 4kWh and 6kWh battery pack, respectively.

By plugging the onboard charger into a regular 5A household socket, the 5kWh lithium-ion battery takes five hours to get fully replenished. As for performance, the motorcycle can accelerate 0-60 km/h in six seconds.

Aera’s hardware setup comprises a double cradle chassis suspended on conventional telescopic front forks and dual rear shocks. Braking duties are carried out by a single front and rear disc complemented by a single-channel ABS. The bike rolls on 17-inch alloys wrapped in road-biased tyres.
