Why India fared poorly in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings
Indian universities have fared poorly in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for the year 2018. None of the Indian universities is even in the top 200. Additionally, there are only 30 Indian institutes in the global 1,000, which is one less than last year.
Except for IIT Bombay, other IITs including IIT Madras and IIT Delhi have fallen by at least one band in their rankings. India's top-ranking university IISc also fell from the 201–250 group to the 251–300 group. According to Livemint, Times Higher Education said,
"Government policy strictly limits the number of students from abroad who can study in India and prevents international scholars from being hired into long-term faculty positions. However, India may recover on this metric because of its world-class university plan, which aims to provide additional funding for selected public and private universities for infrastructure and academics.”
What is disturbing is that India's position is slipping at a time when other Asian countries including China have started doing well in the rankings. Talking about this to Scroll, Phil Baty, Editorial Director, Global Rankings, Times Higher Education, said,
“It is disappointing that India has declined in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings amid increasing global competition. As leading universities in other Asian territories such as China, Hong Kong, and Singapore are consistently rising up the rankings, in part thanks to high and sustained levels of funding, India’s flagship Indian Institute of Science moves further away from the elite top 200.”
With Oxford University holding on to the first position like last time and Cambridge rising up to the second rank, two UK universities are leading the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for the first time in history.

Other Indian universities on the list include Aligarh Muslim University, Banaras Hindu University, University of Delhi, Indian School of Mines, Jadavpur University, National Institute of Technology Rourkela, Panjab University, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Tezpur University, Amrita University, and Andhra University.
