Skills that every millennial leader needs to succeed

Skills that every millennial leader needs to succeed

Saturday July 22, 2017 , 3 min Read

It is a commonly known fact that millennials are entering the workforce in droves and quickly rising up the ranks. As some of the smartest, adept and dynamic employees, many have been the agent of growth and change in their organizations. No wonder companies like Facebook, Airbnb, Instagram and Pinterest, are run by millennials.

If you're a millennial and aspire to be a leader someday, here are five skills you need to start honing today.

Millennial leaders are result-oriented

Leaders first outline the business outcome they seek and then effectively strategize to achieve that outcome. Hence, millennial leaders are expected to use their productivity and efficiency to prioritize the highest-valued work. They understand that each employee in the organization needs to be made aware of their responsibility and how it impacts the company. This result-oriented drive is what makes them highly effective in any endeavor they undertake.

Millennial leaders inspire others

Like generals they martial their employees to the battlefield. Millennials know how to inspire their team members without simply resort to incentives, promotions and pay-hikes when it comes to motivating their employees. They effectively communicate to their team what work needs to be completed and their passion is the driving force for everybody in the organization. They make their team members realize the rewards they will be reaping when they successfully achieve their results and this serves as a huge inspiration.

Millennial leaders are committed to solving problems

When it comes to solving problems, millennial leaders look for the most effective route and not the fastest or the easiest way. They are visionaries who plan a strategy and work hard with their team to execute it. When they come across unforeseen issues, they face the problems head-on instead of resorting to the blame game.

Millennial leaders cultivate relationships

There used to be a time when employees maintained a respectful distance from their bosses, but that time has long passed. Millennial leaders understand that they don't need to stay aloof from their employees to earn their respect. Today, bosses take time out to cultivate a real relationship with their team members and this sets them apart from the leaders of yore.

Millennial leaders are great mentors

They are leaders who weigh an employee's worth by means of his\her hard work, grit and determination and not by virtue of their gender, degree, social standing or ethnicity for that matter. They aim to inspire their employees on a deeper level to be better human beings. They take time out to mentor employees who show potential and wish to see others succeed no matter how time-consuming training them turns out to be.

As John Maxwell once said, "People buy into the leader before they buy into the vision," Millennials should therefore strive to be the best versions of themselves by paying heed to the above mentioned leadership competencies.
