How to transform your internship into a full time job-opportunity

How to transform your internship into a full time job-opportunity

Tuesday December 06, 2016 , 3 min Read

An internship can be the best bet for students to land a dream job and start off their careers on a positive note. However, many of them don't take it seriously. For them, the summer internship is all about spending a few weeks at home and arranging certificates at the end of the tenure by different ways and means.

If you're studying a course in which internship is an integral part of the curriculum, make sure you don't commit the same mistake. Here are some of the tips that will help you turn your internship into a full-time job opportunity:

Choose an internship that interests you

The first step towards making the most of an internship opportunity is choosing the right option for you. Just because it's easy to get, it doesn't mean you should go for it. Take the help of your seniors and super-seniors, faculty members, and friends working in the corporate sector to find a good internship that gives you a fair chance to learn the corporate culture and prepare for the upcoming challenges.

Follow the rules

Remember, you're an intern with no past experience, so don't try to act the rebel at the workplace. If the management doesn't like your behavior, it may terminate your internship with immediate effect. This will not only spoil your college project work but also eliminate an incredible chance of grabbing a full-time job. Follow the rules, dress and communicate properly, and do as you're told.

Build a network

More than what you learn during those two months, it's who you meet and network with that plays a critical role in landing a dream job after college. All the senior leaders and other interns are vital contacts who can recommend you for jobs or alert you when a new opening suitable to your profile pops up. So, make full use of those few weeks and build your network as much as possible.

Engage with your work and show it to them

Since you're an intern, your company expects you to have basic knowledge of the subject matter, but at the same time, it expects full commitment and engagement from your side. Show your eagerness to learn everything about the job to your reporting manager. Ask as many (relevant) questions as possible to clear your doubts. Don't pretend to be an expert when you're not.

Decide your goals

Within the first week itself, schedule an appointment with your reporting manager and set goals for the next few weeks. Discuss the projects you wish to work on during the summer and how they can help you learn new skills. Chances are not all the projects will live up to your expectations. But rather than curse your decision to intern, take these chances as building blocks to your corporate future.

Eventually, it's not impossible to turn any internship into full-time job opportunity. All you need is sheer commitment and devotion towards your work.
