How to make yourself interesting to your co-workers

How to make yourself interesting to your co-workers

Wednesday September 14, 2016 , 4 min Read

Whatever time you spend at your workplace can either become a memory or a nightmare, but you can always alter this experience by making a few changes in your attitude and behavior. Here are a few tips that can help you become interesting to your coworkers and have a wonderful experience at your workplace.

Morning greetings work best

Are you one of those employees who head to their desk without saying hello to others in the morning? Change this attitude right away if you're serious about improving your reputation at your workplace. Start your day on a positive note by simply saying “Good morning, how are you?” to co-workers in the morning and witness a change in their behavior towards you.

Show interest in others

If you truly want to make others interested in you, start showing interest in them. Take initiative and start random talks about life outside the workplace whenever time permits and someone is free. Such small talk can take your relationship with your colleagues to new heights even before you realise it.

Appreciate others for their achievements

Who doesn't want to be appreciated in this world? Most people focus on other’s flaws and not their positive qualities. Don't be one of them. The next time you come across any positive point about your colleagues and support staff, appreciate them. This act will not only make them feel happy but also build a professional bond between you two.

Talk less, listen more

“Most people don't listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.” – Stephen R. Covey

Don't be one of these people. Your colleagues may have had a good day or bad day at home or work. Initiate a talk and give them proper chance to speak. Don't cut their sentences and start talking about yourself. When you speak less and listen more, people automatically get enraptured towards you.

No gossip at work place

If you don’t want others to make fun of you behind your back, avoid office gossip yourself. If someone else approaches you and starts talking about a third person, just change the subject politely. By this way, you can keep the trust of your colleagues and stay out of idle talks about others.

Compliment often

If you think that the employee sitting next to you has dressed amazingly well today, tell him right away. Life is too short to keep such things to yourself. If any compliment of yours can bring a smile to someone's face, you should do it often. Who knows, it might be the best thing they hear that day! Remember, compliment often, criticize seldom.

Lend a helping hand whenever possible

If your work for today is over and you're free, lend a helping hand to your colleagues. By this way, you can take some work pressure off from their head and show that you care for them. At the same time, act as a mentor to new employees who're still getting used to the work culture. Such initiatives offer long-term results.

Always be punctual

No matter if it's a business meeting or a team get-together, avoid coming late. When you value others' time, they value yours. The same rule applies when you're working on a project with someone else. Try your best to finish the job given to you before the deadline. Just because you are late, someone else's efforts shouldn't go in vain.

Give and receive feedback

Constructive criticism is good as long as it doesn't hurt someone. Try to give feedback to your colleagues on a regular basis and ask them to return the favor. This practice will get rid of any chance of office politics and help you improve yourself.

Although the list can go on and on, if you follow these tips, you can easily strengthen your relation with other co-workers and make them interested in you.
