4 Reasons you need to work outside your Home City

4 Reasons you need to work outside your Home City

Friday June 17, 2016 , 4 min Read

“Everybody has to leave, everybody has to leave their home and come back so they can love it again for all new reasons.” -Donald Miller

Leaving home is never easy. It means leaving behind everything you’ve ever known and everyone you’ve ever loved, for the looming unknown. It is the single most intimidating yet powerful feeling in the world, making your first monumental decision like that, and sometimes the fear of the unknown really does strike you from playing the game. We human beings tend to choose comfort, familiarity and security over diving headlong like some adrenaline junkie into a chapter we don’t even know we’ll like.

But here’s the thing. That dive that knocks the wind out of you and makes your insides feel like they’re imploding- that head rush you get when you feel so proud of yourself and everything you’ve achieved on your own, that makes up for giving up your comfort zone. Like we’ve been taught through the ages, the magic really does happen outside your comfort zone, so why do you want to play safe?

This article goes out to every baffled soul at the brink of their career, who need to leave their nest and soar into what is surely going to be the most growing and exhilarating phase of their whole lives.

Just the experience of it

Starting down the road to employment brings many tags, some great and some not so much. Your first job away from home is the one that you’ll always attribute to, the one you’ll always remember. It will give you the good kick up your rear end that you need in its entirety, to get set go into the never ending crawl up the ladder, with its many pitfalls and speed-breakers. So don’t hold back from this teeth-grinding experience by choosing the easy way out. Drive yourself to get out of your comfort zone aka home and move to a new City where you’ll be broke, tired, sleepless and hungry a whole lot but so, so satisfied.

Hit the refresh button

Move to a City where no one knows who you are, where you haven’t been typed casted into a category because of juvenile misdemeanours. Start afresh, somewhere where you can recreate yourself and be whoever you deem inspiring for the day. Getting a fresh start and reworking your identity, especially when it comes to the work space, will help you discover hidden atoms of determination and own the invisible hat of fresh creativity you didn’t even know you had on this whole while.

You can be your own person

Moving away from home to start working in a setup where you know no one, can’t take any help for granted and have to sweat it out double and triple times will make you fall in love with yourself in a completely new way. You will become your own pillar, your own support-system and believe me when I say, you wouldn’t want it any other way! To believe that you can get yourself into and out of any situation will make you top your own charts and expectations, so don’t hold back on yourself because you want that mom-cooked meal and your childhood blanket to curl up at night. Live and learn by yourself and your own experiences, set your own rules and fall hard but only onto yourself. Nothing, nothing in the world compares to that feeling when you can pat yourself on the back after a hard day’s work and actually say- well done!

Do it for the story

That story where you left everything behind, the home, the people and every shred of familiar that you have enveloped yourself with to be comfortable. Get the taste of life when you are going to be all by yourself, and broke a lot – but at the end of the day – it is going to be a story that you would want to tell to your friends, your kids and everyone else who means something to you. The sense of accomplishment is going to be unbeatable.

This story about how you took a pretty nail-biting leap of faith and how it became one of the best decisions of your life is always going to be a good one to tell.
