Mommy's my first love

Mommy's my first love

Sunday May 08, 2016 , 4 min Read

All of us have been overheard, at some point or another, saying, “My mom’s the best!” And all of us fully mean it every time we say it. What’s even more interesting is that we’re all right in believing and saying it – every single time! A mother is what no one else can be. She believes in you like nobody else will, stands by you like a pillar on the roughest days, and patiently watches you make mistakes but defends you unconditionally even when you are wrong! These are awesome things all mothers are universally made of. With the strength of an elephant, swiftness of a deer and courage of a lioness, mothers sure have some super powers! Each one of them is so unique and fathomless!

Talking about my mom, I would say she’s “my first love” and there are more reasons for this than I could ever pen down. We fight and then behave like it did not even happen; vent and then have conversations like it did not matter. She has a massive heart of gold and has epitomised what “giving” truly means. I sometimes even rebuke her for going out of her way to help others, but the happiness she exudes thereafter makes me only too happy not to complain anymore!

I have always been adventurous and unconventional, and there are more occasions than one when my mother disagreed with the path I chose to take. But being the person she is, she would never try to override my decisions even in my early days. All she told me was to do things with “dignity” and “let bygones be bygones”. I figured much later that by cleverly laying emphasis on just these two principles, she inculcated in me the importance of preserving relationships even when times were tough.

I recall one time when I was going through a rough patch and decided to take things in a direction that she wouldn’t have taken. She still stood by me and said, “Do what makes you happy. I could not ask for more.” Nothing will ever match up to the strength that I felt within me at that moment. I suddenly felt even more confident about making this permanent, hard decision.

On a lighter note, my mother is an absolute ‘live wire’. You’d be surprised to know that she’s the life of parties and can easily set the dance floor on fire. Yes, she almost gives me a run for my money when it comes to shaking a leg! So it wouldn’t be wrong to say that dancing is in my DNA and I owe my skills (well, limited at that!) entirely to her. Out of sheer interest, she has also learnt by herself to put on make-up impeccably and often gives me interesting tips on how to get it right the very first time. Pretty cool, isn’t it?

It doesn’t end there folks! My mom is an artist and painter. She is blessed with great aesthetic sense and our home is a testimony to that. She loves to do up the house every now and then, and has great understanding of colours and art. She is, in fact, the reason I can decipher colours and pull together palettes, not something I’d imagined I would do for a living eventually!

Among her other traits that rubbed off on me is the art of doggedly following up on stuff without breathing down people’s necks (she actually follows up with me right from eating to going to bed and getting up while I’m lazying on Sundays and I can’t help but be amused). She is a relentless hard worker and does not give in until she is satisfied with the output – I often see myself doing the same.

I strongly feel that a lot of what goes on at KAARYAH is from habits and daily behaviors that my mom inculcated in me. The combination of what she passed on in her genes and taught me over the years have made me the person I am and I couldn’t be more thankful for that! Very few people will ever know the joy of having a fun friend and patient guardian rolled into one. I am only too lucky!
