[Infographics] The hottest job titles that didn't exist 5 years ago

[Infographics] The hottest job titles that didn't exist 5 years ago

Thursday January 09, 2014 , 2 min Read

Apple announced on Tuesday that their customers spent over $10 billion in the App Store in 2013, of that over $1 billion was spent in December alone. Through "App Economy" Apple's total jobs creation figure has grown to 598,500 in the US. Meanwhile, Indian app development market has surpassed $227 million in 2012.

Rewind back to 10 or 15 years and the job market didn't look anything like what it has become today. Check out this data that has been published by LinkedIn about jobs that didn’t exit five years ago but currently are the hottest job titles in the market. Who had heard about “iPhone App Developer” or who knew what “Zumba Academy licensed instructors” were? Yet a substantial portion of the current working population earns their livelihood doing a job that didn’t exist a decade ago.

LinkedIn examined the data of over 259 million members’ profiles to determine the top 10 most popular job titles that were nowhere to be found in 2008.

As NY Times op-ed columnist Thomas Friedman said it, employers “are all looking for the same kind of people – people who not only have the critical thinking skills to do the value-adding jobs that technology can’t, but also people who can invent, adapt and reinvent their jobs every day, in a market that changes faster than ever.”

However frightening the thought appear, we need to be prepared for a future filled with uncertainty? A decade from now, we’ll all be disrupted by lightning-fast evolution of technology and we will be doing some new type of work that we couldn't even possibly imagine today.

Even at YourStory.com, when we conducted the first startup jobs fair last year, we’ve witnessed that employment landscape evolving rapidly. Over 4000 applicants and 60+ companies participated in StartupJobsfair.com. As part of the campaign we also launched "Awesome Startup Workplace Award". India's first startup workplace benchmark and ranking. And we profiled the work culture & opportunities at some of the best Indian startups in an attempt to promote startups as an exciting career option.
