Snapdeal enters the gifting space with its new gifting section

Snapdeal.com launched gifting category on its site today. Snapdeal claims that this new category is aimed to customize a customer’s shopping experience by allowing him/her to select gifts which are appropriate for a specific occasion like upcoming festivals like Rakhi. Apart from this, the gifting and events section has curated product lists under various gifting categories.

Speaking about the launch, Amit Maheshwari, Vice President, Fashion, Snapdeal.com said, “At Snapdeal.com, our motto is – Anything that a customer wants should be available on Snapdeal.com at best prices. We are extremely motivated and thrilled about this new category. Given the upcoming festival season, this is the perfect time to launch this category. With this, we are trying to help our customers overcome the challenges faced while selecting the perfect gifts for their loved ones.”

Our take

On competitor sites, like Flipkart, Myntra, Jabong etc, the facility of providing gift coupons, cards and vouchers were prevalent. But providing a curated list of products on gifting themes, Snapdeal has taken this a step ahead, entering the realm of pure-play gifting sites like Giftxoxo or Giveter.Combine this with the assortment in inventory that Snapdeal possesses, I think it is safe to say that this is the largest gifting site in India. However, gifting isn’t about having the maximum number of products; and successful gifting companies are those which also help customers make a quick decision.

Snapdeal’s gifting section does this to an extent, by categorizing products based on gender, age groups, workplace related and events. But what will be interesting to see is what their “gift finder” section does. Currently, the section is marked as coming soon and on clicking, leads to a random assortment of products.

For now, it is an interesting move from Snapdeal’s end and we will bring you updates on the traction this recent launch brings to the marketplace ecommerce company.
