[Culture Series] A young team building products for the globe- Druva Technologies

Tuesday April 09, 2013 , 4 min Read

This article is a part of the Culture Series we’ll be carrying as a run up to the Startup Jobs Fair, India’s first exclusive campaign to connect the most promising talent with the most exciting startups. This series will bring out the culture of some of the most dynamic startups that have managed to scale and make a mark… Here, we talk about Druva

As a global tech product company from India, Druva Technologies is one of the success stories the Indian startup ecosystem is proud of. Founded by Jaspreet Singh and Milind Borate, Druva Technologies is a Pune based company setup in 2007 to provide better enterprise data backup. Druva has raised multiple rounds of funding (Series A from Sequoia and IAN, Series B from Nexus and Sequoia), the latest being a $25 million Series C round.

Druva has a product called, inSync which allows enterprise mobility including backup protection optimized over WAN (Wide Area Network), strong BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) support, and a non-intrusive end-user experience.

What does this mean? It secures all the data within an enterprise and makes it easy for employees to access data from within and outside premises, makes sharing easier and gives the company a view on how data is flowing. Powering this product, is a team of close to 150 people spread across the globe.

Catering to a global audience, Druva’s humble beginnings are in Pune, India. As the business grew and the company acquired more clients in the US, they setup their Sunnyvale, CA office in 2011. The Pune office has 110 employees which mainly comprises the development team. The US office houses 35 employees and the new UK office has 10 people. The core technology team in Pune is of 65 people which include developers and the quality assurance engineers. This is also the team for which Druva is primarily hiring.

Why Druva?

Sauraj Jhingan, HR manager at Druva, says, “We work on real life problems that benefit our customers and this really goes a long way in keeping the developers motivated.” Whenever an employee is working on a project for which he can see the results and impact, the level of job satisfaction shoots up.

Also, for a startup, onboarding customers like NASA and Zee-Turner are big motivators. As Jaspreet had written in his post on the company’s blog, it leads to a sense of achievement within the employees as well because at the end of the day, it’s a team effort. Continuing the good work, Druva has only looked up and recently won the Hot Company of Silicon Valley Award by Lead411.

A young team

A visit to Druva office infuses one with the youthful energy, “Our average age is less than 30 years!” says Sauraj -- a great indication of how fresh the company is. Yes, experience is always importance to steer and guide but youth can achieve a lot with it’s energy. Jaspreet, the CEO is less than 30 years old while Milind brings a balance in the founding duo with his decade-plus experience in enterprise product development and delivery.

Advocates of an open cultureWe’re increasingly seeing this in the younger companies -- a very open culture. Like many others, Druva believes in task oriented measurement and there is no check on the number of hours an employee is working or where he or she is working from.

“We have a flat hierarchy and an open door policy where we allow information to flow smoothly within the organization,” says Sauraj. There are regular team outings and Friday afternoons are generally dedicated to knowledge sharing sessions and activities that involve personal development.

A strong testimony to the fact that the Indian tech startup space has arrived, Druva is certainly a company that should be on your list if you’re looking for a job.
