Founded by Ex-Google and Cisco Engineers, Bloomreach Strengthens Operations in India

Monday August 13, 2012 , 4 min Read

In an effort to make the net more relevant, Bloomreach was founded in 2009 by Ahutosh Garg and Raj De Datta. A key member of Google’s search quality team, Ashu realized that the search algorithms needed better information from web businesses to deliver exactly what the consumer wanted. Raj De Datta was director of Product Marketing at Cisco and met many marketers facing extreme competition for the most common consumer needs and no scalable option to make their most relevant and unique offerings visible. Combining forces, the duo started Bloomreach with a mission to create a more relevant internet.

Backed with a $16 million funding from Bain Capital Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners, Bloomreach has been in stealth mode for about a good part of 2 years. Having started going out aggressively only in early 2012, the company also made a footprint in India. Vinodh Kumar, again a googler is the Head of India Operations. An innovator and a core techie at heart, Vinodh spent the last six years at Google where he was the technical leader for Google News quality also served as engineering lead for Google Apps Marketplace and led Google India Music Search.

Having left Google with an aim to make a better search engine might come across as preposterous to many but that is how Ashutosh Garg started off. Thinking about how to do this, the model for Bloomreach evolved and currently helps businesses give more relevant information to the search engines so that they can search better.

There are three primary products: BloomSearch, BloomLift and BloomSocial.

"There are offline stores that go online but the online experience they provide typically mimics the offline one and end up not getting discovered. That is where our BloomSearch product helps out - It structures your website based on how users look for the products rather than how the inventory is structured, thereby exposing better information to search engines," explains Vinodh about Bloomsearch. "BloomLift is concentrated on ads and helps customers generate more revenue from paid search," adds Vinodh.

BloomSearch and BloomLift are the two products which have been developed till now and BloomSocial is in the pipeline.

“Bloomreach generates 94% average annual incremental traffic and will generate 52 million incremental pageviews for its customers this quarter,” they say. Bloomreach has a strong client list including the likes of Godiva and Yahoo!

Why India?

The founders lived in Silicon Valley and the Valley is where great technology-centric entrepreneurial companies are built. Raj de Datta wrote on their blog, "After a lot of discussion we realized that most great software companies are built on great products. And great products are built by great teams who have a high degree of interaction, and are able to iterate to the right answer fast. Software companies don’t fail because the product was too expensive to build, they mostly fail because there was no market for what they built. As a result, it made sense to start in Silicon Valley and build product leadership with a small team of amazing engineers and product execs."

3 years and 70 customers later, Bloomreach went global in April this year and set up an R&D center in Bangalore with Vinodh Kumar at its helm. “Bangalore, as we all know is a very good talent pool of developers and engineers who want to work on products from scratch. The MNCs rarely provide the engineer with an opportunity wherein he can truly realize his potential. We need people of high caliber and we’ve got something which will quench the requirements of these folks. This is one of the major reasons why we’ve set up a center in India.” informs Vinodh. On an expansion drive, Bloomreach is definitely a company to look out for.
